MARANA (KGUN9-TV) – The start of the school year is quickly approaching and Marana’s newest charter school is still looking for students.
Construction on the Leman Academy of Excellence began back in February. It’s now just a few weeks away from being complete.
Tucson native and best selling author, Dr. Kevin Leman built the new K-6 charter school based on a classical education model that is set to have kids hitting the books this school year. Tonight’s open house welcoming new students and parents looking to stray from Southern Arizona’s public schools.
In just a few short months, the Leman Academy of Excellence progressed from breaking ground and laying concrete to bringing state of the art classrooms to life.
Construction has come a long way and still has far to go. Principal Dennis O’Rilley says the school will be completely finished in just three weeks.
The classical education model taught at the school teaches students new languages at an early age while encouraging kids to explore critical thinking and self-expression.
Dr. Kevin Leman outlines that model in several of his best selling books and thinks his innovative stance on education is exactly what young students need.
Karen Roat has been homeschooling her daughter who is going into 6th grade, and for her child’s first year in a public school she thinks she found the right fit.
“I looked at the curriculum and what they’re doing and their philosophy the way they’re teaching and its just a good match for us,” said Roat. “So we decided to enroll and see how it is.”
Leman academy is still accepting students for the upcoming year. The first day of school is August 3rd.
