TUCSON – A unique local charter school is celebrating big growth.
The Leman Academy of Excellence is wrapping up its school year of operation. The Marana campus has been so successful the school is planning to open two more locations. One will be in Sierra Vista, and the other will be in Mesa.
The school began with 450 students, and has grown to an enrollment of 960.
The tuition-free charter school is based on the work of psychologist Kevin Leman.
“To just meet the need of the incoming kids, the word has spread fast of the Leman Academy of Excellence,” said Leman, who founded the school. “We have a tough curriculum. We expect the best of kids, and we have good discipline here, and kids seem to love it, parents seem to love it.”
Leman’s curriculum focuses on teaching kids how to learn for themselves while keeping a supportive balance between students and families.
The approach seems to be working.
School officials said most students are exceeding their testing benchmarks by 60 to 70 percent.
