How We Test

Leman Virtual Academy

It is important to remember that each state and each way you acquire and enroll in Leman Virtual Academy may require different requirements for assessment. In Arizona, your scholar will be responsible to take the AzMERIT end of year test. We will work with you, as the instructor and your scholar to expose them to the deep rich content provided by Leman Academy. That content, taught with you as the primary instructor and our staff as support will lead your scholar towards subject mastery. Our common aim is to prepare your scholar for life after their Leman Academy formal schooling. In Colorado, the testing role relies solely on the parent and the LVA program and the campus you enroll in for once weekly enrichment are there to support your efforts. Each state is different. You can use our resources around assessment as much or as little as you would like, outside of Arizona.

Formative Assessment Strategies
The following are formative assessment strategies that we suggest our home school instructors use throughout the course of the school year that will provide information for the homes school instructor to adjust and improve their own instructional methods as well as monitor the scholars’ progress and learning while they are still happening: discussion, observations, rubric, questioning, partner work, scholar/individual white board work, small group, short quizzes, end-of-unit or chapter tests, end-of-term or semester exams, warm-up to check scholar understanding, closure for summary/reflection of what learned, homework, games, narration, projects, reading assessments, writing samples, nature study notebook, and copybooks.

Types of Assessment to be used at Leman Academy of Excellence an Leman Virtual Academy:

  1. Formative Assessment: Is a two-fold assessment: at the individual scholar level because it measures how a particular scholar is progressing in the instructional program and identifies where support may be needed; at the classroom level with on-going assessments, reviews and observations used by our teachers to improve their instructional methods in the classroom throughout the school year.
    • Daily assessment
    • Linked to learning experience
    • Assesses scholar understanding and mastery of skills
    • Data used to modifying instruction
  2. Summative Assessment: A form of assessment that may be teacher created or provided through purchased curriculum, summative data assessments produce valuable information that is used to make curriculum decisions, direct future instruction, and improve instructional practices.
    Summative assessment data are collected through end-of-unit or chapter tests. If the home school instructor uses our pre-programmed courses, summative assessments are built into each lesson.
    Summative assessment is used by the teacher as an accountability measure and will be included in the grading process, and they will occur after instruction has taken place every 2-4 weeks, depending on the content area of study
  3. Benchmark Assessment: Teachers will use to: 1) measure the achievement of school learning standards and/or Arizona Standards of scholars and 2) provide information that can be used to guide instruction in cyclical fashion. ***Plan to administer 4 Benchmarks using Galileo or MAPS nationally normed assessments.
    1. Measure scholar mastery of standards targeted for instruction, indicating what scholars have accomplished when given appropriate learning opportunity
    2. Predictive of scholar performance on statewide test
    3. Data used at classroom level to support Data-Driven Instruction
    4. Helps teachers with future instructional planning
