Scholar Showcase
A closer look at the ideas, research and projects our scholars bring to life.
The Marana Scholar Showcase highlights selected work created by Leman Academy scholars. These projects offer a glimpse into how scholars explore ideas, ask thoughtful questions, apply what they are learning and communicate their understanding in meaningful ways.
What Scholars Are Learning and Creating
At Leman Academy, learning goes beyond remembering facts. Scholars are encouraged to make connections, think carefully about what they learn and express their ideas with clarity. Projects give them opportunities to research meaningful topics, solve problems, collaborate with others and turn classroom learning into work they can share with their community.
Featured Scholar Project
Stop Teen Illiteracy
By Charleigh Caudillo, Isa Portillo & Emily Diep
Teen illiteracy became the focus of this scholar-led project exploring why literacy matters and how greater awareness can help address the problem. The scholars developed the idea of creating a documentary to share what they learned, bring attention to teen literacy and encourage support for solutions that can make a difference.
About the Mission
The scholars began by researching teen literacy and considering the challenges young people can face when strong reading skills are not fully developed. Their project focuses on bringing greater attention to the issue and encouraging others to recognize literacy as an important part of a young person’s education, independence and future.
Raising Awareness Through Documentary
Rather than presenting their research only as a traditional classroom assignment, the scholars developed the idea of communicating their message through a documentary. Their goal was to use research and storytelling to help others understand the importance of teen literacy and encourage greater support for efforts that address the issue.
Why Literacy Matters
As they explored the topic, the scholars considered how limited literacy can affect much more than academic performance. Reading and comprehension skills help young people understand information, evaluate what they are being told and make informed decisions. Their research also examined how difficulty understanding written information may leave young people more vulnerable to misleading or exploitative situations.
From Research to Action
The project also asked an important question: how can awareness lead to action? The scholars researched companies and organizations involved in literacy programs, youth support and corporate social responsibility. From there, they considered how partnerships, community involvement and financial support could help literacy initiatives reach more young people.
Our Documentary
The documentary brings the different parts of the project together, giving the scholars an opportunity to communicate what they learned in a format designed to reach a broader audience. Through their research and presentation, they set out to explain why teen literacy deserves attention and why supporting literacy can make a meaningful difference in the lives of young people.
